Kata & Kumite Rules of Competition
KATA COMPETITION RULES
- Each ring will utilize five (5) judges. In the event of a shortage, the ring may proceed with three (3) judges.
- Beginner / Novice / Intermediate divisions may repeat the same kata in every round.
- Advanced divisions must alternate kata each round (athletes must know at least two different kata).
- Beginner / Novice / Intermediate kata must be selected from the USA Karate kata list.
- Advanced kata must be selected from the WKF kata list.
- In youth divisions, two athletes compete simultaneously.
- In senior/adult & advanced divisions, if time and space permit, athletes (AKA / AO) may perform individually. This is at the discretion of the Head Referee at the table.
KUMITE COMPETITION RULES
Officials
5-Judge Setup:
- One (1) Referee
- Four (4) Judges
3-Judge Setup:
- One (1) Referee
- Two (2) Judges
Match Time
- All matches will be 1.5 minutes (running time).
- Advanced divisions will compete with 2-minute matches (STOP time).
STOPPING THE MATCH & SCORING
- When the referee stops the match, they will immediately indicate their opinion (AKA or AO).
- The majority decision determines the call.
Examples:
- Ref: AKA | Judge: AKA | Judge: AO → Point AKA
- Ref did not see | Judge: AKA | Judge: AO → No point — Tsuzukete Hajime
- Ref: AKA | Judge: AO | Judge: AO → Point AO
HIGHER POINT WINS
- Waza-ari vs Yuko → Waza-ari
- Ippon vs Waza-ari → Ippon
- Waza-ari vs (2 Ippon) → Ippon
- The referee will only show the higher point before making the call.
- If the match ends in a tie with no Senshu and no higher points, the referee will call Hantei.
CONTACT RULES
Ages 13 and Under
- No contact with the head with the hand/fist or foot.
- Touching the helmet may still be considered a warning, especially if there is visible impact.
Ages 14 and Up
- Controlled contact with the hand or foot to the head is a scoring technique.
- Light skin contact is permitted.
- Excessive contact, unsafe techniques, or loss of control will be penalized.
If Contact With Impact Occurs
- The referee must stop the match, stop the time, and check the athlete before continuing.
Ages 11 and Under
- No Ashi Barai (foot sweeps) or throws are allowed.
All athletes must avoid techniques they cannot control.
EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR KUMITE
All competitors must wear WKF / USA-NKF-approved equipment or equivalent, including:
- Red or Blue gloves
- Red or Blue shin & instep guards
- Male groin protector (mandatory)
- Female chest protector (mandatory)
Equivalent equipment means the athlete is using the correct red/blue style gear with the same protective design and function, but the official WKF/USA-NKF logo or stamp may be missing.
Additional Gear
- WKF Body Protector: Optional
- Headgear/Helmets: Optional for youth divisions only (18+ may NOT wear helmets)
UNIFORM BELT / COLOR GUIDELINES
- Athletes should wear at least a Blue belt and blue gloves when on the Blue side.
- Athletes should wear a Red belt and red gloves when on the Red side.
(There will be NO disqualification for a missing belt or non-WKF stamped gear; however, incorrect colors may delay officiating decisions and may work against the athlete.)
EYEWEAR
- No glasses
- Competition-safe sport goggles are permitted
MOUTHGUARD (MANDATORY)
- A mouthguard is mandatory, unless headgear is worn (then it is optional).
- No refunds will be issued if an athlete cannot compete because they are missing gear.
JUDGES’ RESPONSIBILITIES
Judges should:
- Alert the referee when a Jogai (out-of-bounds) occurs
- Alert the referee if they observe contact
- Signal points clearly and hold flags out for at least 2 seconds
CODE OF CONDUCT
Tokon Martial Arts / the host reserves the right to refuse service, and to remove or ban any participant or spectator for unsafe behavior, unsportsmanlike conduct, foul or abusive conduct, vandalism, or any other behavior deemed unsafe or inappropriate.
Liability Release and Consent:

GENERAL RELEASE OF LIABILITY, ASSUMPTION OF RISK, AND INDEMNIFICATION AGREEMENT
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY — THIS IS A LEGAL DOCUMENT
I, the undersigned participant and/or parent or legal guardian of the minor participant named below, acknowledge and agree as follows:
1. VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION
I understand that participation in any program, class, event, activity, or service offered, organized, hosted, sponsored, or facilitated by Tokon Martial Arts, LLC (“Activities”) is voluntary. Activities may include, but are not limited to, martial arts instruction, sparring (including point sparring), conditioning, tournaments, camps, seminars, workshops, demonstrations, testing, social events, parent programs, travel-related activities, and other related programs, whether conducted on a single day or multiple days, and whether held on-site, offsite, or during travel.
2. ASSUMPTION OF RISK
I understand and expressly acknowledge that participation in martial arts and related physical activities involves inherent and foreseeable risks, including but not limited to:
- Physical contact with other participants
- Falls, collisions, or impacts
- Cuts, bruises, sprains, strains, or muscle injuries
- Broken bones or joint injuries
- Concussion or head injury
- Permanent injury, paralysis, or death
I understand that injuries may occur even when all safety rules, supervision, training standards, and protective equipment are followed. I knowingly, voluntarily, and expressly assume all risks, whether known or unknown, foreseeable or unforeseeable, inherent or incidental, arising from participation in the Activities.
3. RELEASE AND WAIVER OF LIABILITY
To the fullest extent permitted by California law, I hereby RELEASE, WAIVE, DISCHARGE,AND COVENANT NOT TO SUE Tokon Martial Arts, LLC, together with all of its past, present, and future owners, members, managers, officers, directors, trustees, administrators, instructors, coaches, employees, volunteers, agents, representatives, contractors, referees, judges, officials, insurers, affiliates, successors, and assigns, as well as host facilities, venue owners, landlords, lessors, municipalities, co-sponsors, and event partners (collectively, the “Released Parties”), from any and all claims, demands, causes of action, damages, losses, or liabilities arising out of or related to participation in the Activities.
This release includes claims arising from the ordinary negligence of the Released Parties, but does not apply to gross negligence, willful misconduct, or conduct prohibited by law.
4. INDEMNIFICATION AND HOLD HARMLESS
I agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Released Parties from and against any and all claims, damages, losses, costs, or expenses (including reasonable attorney’s fees) arising out of or related to:
- My participation or the participation of the minor named below
- My actions or omissions, or those of the minor
- Claims brought by third parties arising from participation in the Activities
5. MINOR PARTICIPANT AGREEMENT
If the participant is a minor, I certify that I am the parent or legal guardian of the minor participant.
I understand that under California law, a parent or guardian may not waive a minor’s future personal injury claims in all circumstances. Nevertheless, I expressly agree to:
- Assume all risks on behalf of the minor
- Agree to this Release and Indemnification in my individual capacity
- Indemnify and hold harmless the Released Parties from any claims brought by or on behalf of the minor arising out of participation in the Activities
6. MEDICAL AUTHORIZATION
I certify that the participant is physically and medically able to participate in the Activities. In the event of an injury, illness, or medical emergency, I authorize Tokon Martial Arts, LLC and its representatives to obtain emergency medical care or treatment deemed reasonably necessary.
I understand and agree that I am financially responsible for any medical care provided.
7. PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND SUPERVISION
I agree to:
- Follow all rules, instructions, and safety guidelines
- Use only approved protective equipment and ensure proper fit
- Conduct myself (and ensure the minor conducts themselves) in a safe, respectful, and sportsmanlike manner
- Accept responsibility for personal equipment and belongings
I understand that Tokon Martial Arts, LLC does not provide constant or one-on-one supervision and that participation requires personal responsibility appropriate to the participant’s age, maturity, and ability.
8. COMMUNICABLE DISEASE ACKNOWLEDGMENT
I understand that participation in group activities involves the risk of exposure to communicable diseases, including but not limited to COVID-19 or other illnesses. I agree not to participate if experiencing symptoms of illness or if advised by a medical professional to refrain from participation.
9. TRANSPORTATION AND TRAVEL
This agreement applies to Activities occurring before, during, or after scheduled programs, including travel to and from Activities, whether by private vehicle, third-party transportation, or other means.
10. PROGRAM CHANGES AND CANCELLATION
I understand that Tokon Martial Arts, LLC reserves the right to modify schedules, activities, locations, instructors, rules, or cancel any Activity due to circumstances beyond reasonable control, including but not limited to weather, facility conditions, staffing, safety concerns, or power interruptions. I waive any claims arising from such changes or cancellations.
11. PHOTO AND MEDIA RELEASE
I grant Tokon Martial Arts, LLC permission to use photographs, video recordings, or other media of the participant taken during the Activities for promotional, educational, or informational purposes in any media, without compensation. This permission is irrevocable.
12. UNKNOWN CLAIMS (CALIFORNIA CIVIL CODE §1542)
I expressly waive any rights under California Civil Code §1542, which states:
“A general release does not extend to claims that the creditor or releasing party does not know or suspect to exist in their favor at the time of executing the release, which if known must have materially affected their settlement with the debtor or released party.”
I understand and agree that this release applies to all claims, whether known or unknown, suspected or unsuspected, arising from participation in the Activities.
13. CONTINUING EFFECT
This agreement shall remain in effect for all current and future participation in the Activities unless revoked in writing by Tokon Martial Arts, LLC.
14. ELECTRONIC SIGNATURE
I agree that this agreement may be executed electronically and that an electronic or digitalsignature shall have the same force and effect as an original handwritten signature.
15. GOVERNING LAW AND VENUE
This agreement shall be governed by and interpreted under the laws of the State of California, and any legal action shall be brought exclusively in Sacramento County, California.
16. SEVERABILITY
If any provision of this agreement is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.
17. ENTIRE AGREEMENT
This document constitutes the entire agreement between the parties and supersedes all prior oral or written agreements or understandings. I am not relying on any representations outside of this document.
ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND SIGNATURE
I UNDERSTAND THAT BY SIGNING THIS AGREEMENT, I AM GIVING UP CERTAIN LEGAL RIGHTS, INCLUDING THE RIGHT TO SUE.
I HAVE READ THIS AGREEMENT CAREFULLY, FULLY UNDERSTAND ITS CONTENTS, AND SIGN IT FREELY AND VOLUNTARILY.
